Tanzara Gallery presents the recent works by renowned artist Raja Changez Sultan, whose distinctive practice has evolved over many decades. Recently conferred the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his contribution to the arts, the artist was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree by Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, USA, for his lifelong contribution to the arts. In his ‘Himalayan Odyssey’ series, the artist transports the viewer into a world of grandeur, mystique and contemplation. Emerging through luminous layers of blue, turquoise and violet, the Himalayan landscape appears less as a geographical place and more as an imagined realm, suspended somewhere between memory and dream. Alongside this, his ‘Divided Self’ series delves into the complexities of the human psyche. Enigmatic female figures, solitary or together, emerge through veils of colour, their forms hovering between presence and absence, revealing and concealing themselves in equal measure. Moving fluidly between the figurative and abstract; the artist uses colour, atmosphere and suggestion to create a world unmistakably his own. Of Mountains and Muses brings together these two endearing series, the majestic landscapes of Himalayan Odyssey, and the mysterious female figures of Divided Self, in a compelling dialogue. We invite you to experience this body of work and journey through the distinctive world of Raja Changez Sultan, where mountains, muses, memory and mystery converge!
